Pan: A Unique Coat Rack Made from Recovered Steel

Reinterpreting Waste Materials into Functional Art

The Pan coat rack, designed by Sapiens Design Studio, is a stunning example of how waste materials can be transformed into functional and aesthetically pleasing objects. Inspired by nature and utilizing recovered steel, Pan showcases the beauty of innovative shapes and sustainable design.

Pan is a coat rack that is entirely made from recovered steel, obtained from the design and optimization of waste materials resulting from the industrial processes of steel laser cutting. This unique approach not only reduces waste but also creates a one-of-a-kind aesthetic. Each Pan coat rack is unique, as its pattern depends on how the elements are randomly arranged in the slab during the laser cutting process.

Made of high-quality SSAB Swedish Steel, Pan is designed to be long-lasting and resistant to deformation and oxidation. The laser cutting process transforms the two-dimensional sheet into a three-dimensional faceted volume with a sculptural value. The finished product is not only functional but also visually captivating, with its play of light and shadows.

The dimensions of Pan vary depending on the desired height. The high coat racks measure 506 mm by 440 mm by 1800 mm, while the short coat racks measure 412 mm by 444 mm by 1450 mm. The design allows for up to four hangers of different heights, providing versatility and functionality.

The Pan coat rack was conceived by the Sapiens Design Studio in Milan in 2021 and brought to life by Nestart srl in Rolo (RE). It was first presented during the Milan Design Week in September 2021, where it garnered attention for its innovative use of materials and its commitment to sustainable design.

By following a circular economy philosophy, Pan exemplifies the potential of waste materials. The design process involved careful consideration of the layout of the slab to optimize material usage. This not only gives the waste a new life but also reduces the environmental impact associated with its regeneration.

The development of Pan presented several challenges. The designers had to find internal logistic solutions that aligned with the company's production cycle. Additionally, they had to optimize the arrangement of the cuts, identify the optimal thicknesses of the material, and ensure a smooth laser cutting process to optimize production times. The result is a multifaceted shape that surpasses two-dimensionality and enhances the aesthetics of the pattern obtained.

With its unique design and commitment to sustainability, Pan has been recognized for its excellence. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2022. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.

The Pan coat rack is not only a functional piece but also a testament to the possibilities of sustainable design. By reimagining waste materials, Sapiens Design Studio has created a truly unique and environmentally conscious product that adds beauty and functionality to any space.
